Major, Georg

Major, Georg
(1502–74)
   Theologian.
Major was a professor at the University of Wittenberg. He aroused the wrath of the Lutheran Matthias flacius by arguing that good works were necessary for salvation. The Reformers, headed by Nicholas von Amsdorf, a close friend of luther, were insistent that salvation was by faith alone. Amsdorf indeed went so far as to argue that good works were positively harmful. Ultimately the Formula of Concord of 1577 maintained that although a Christian was, in fact, sure to do good works, his salvation was entirely independent of them.
